The British, having earlier militarily overcome the Trekkers to appropriate their Natalia Republic and then by deceit and sheer force of arms, had subjugated the Zulu nation. They were now greedily eying the two new and very wealthy Trekker Republics. In a vain attempt to usurp the Trekker Republic of South Africa (ZAR) the British were to suffer yet another monumental defeat in Africa. This time at the hands of the fiercely independent Trekker farmers turned soldier.
